At the center of the mesmerizing rolling hills, resided a young shepherd. His existence was essentially pure, simple yet virtuous. His main role was to look after his herd of ewes.

Their soft bleating and the murmuring here of the gales among the single tree on the hilltop were his main associates. Day upon day, watching over his charges instilled in him a notion of calm satisfaction.

Yet, there were occasional moments of isolation, when the shepherd boy would pine for company. During one such occasion out of sheer tedium, the shepherd boy devised a naughty plan.

Tales of wild beasts hunting on sheep had long been circulating in the hamlet. So, the boy chose to leveraged this fear and played a trick on the inhabitants.

One morning he ran into the village screaming “Wolf! There is a wolf attacking my sheep!” The frightened villagers ran up the hills to help but discovered no beast.

The boy chuckled at the puzzle on their faces. This game persisted for a few days more. However, one morning, a real wolf actually charge at the flock. The shepherd boy ran for help, screaming “Wolf, Wolf!” But this time, no one responded.

Frustrated and alone, the boy battled against the wolf but managed to protect only few of his sheep. Devastated, he returned to the town only to be met with a scolding on honesty and the consequences of dishonesty.

His tale of this shepherd boy has been transmitted generations as a mediaeval parable for teaching the significance of honesty, the consequences of lying and the risks of crying wolf. Moreover, it stresses how trust once violated, is tough to reclaim. It's a story as pertinent today as it was anciently.
